Hanging artwork too high is probably the most common design mistake. Hang art at eye level. We understand that everyone has a different eye level, given height differences. Average eye level is between 58”-60” above the floor. The center of the art work should be between 58 to 60 inches off the floor. Raise the art up about five inches for ceilings ten feet or higher.

Pushing furniture up to the wall is a mistake. It seems logical in one’s brain to push the furniture right up to the wall, because you think it will give your space more room. However the trick to furniture groupings is to create an intimate space that is somewhat pulled together. Leave at least one to three inches between a furniture piece and the wall. Think about this, if all the surrounding pieces are pushed right up to the wall, the space plan is too vast and disconnected. Use area rugs to unite furniture groupings in larger rooms.

Placing a small rug in a large space happens more often than not. This will result in a disproportional look. If you have a rug that you are dying to use, place it on top a larger monochromatic rug. This will stretch the proportions out and still allow you to use the rug that you love.

Using worn out or flat accent pillows. Accent pillows can become flat after some time. Typically accent pillow’s outer fabric has a zipper. This allows you to replace the filling when the core has become flat. Down filled pillows need to be fluffed after each use. You may also want to add some extra down filling, if you have had the pillows for a while. Flat pillows make a room look tired. This is a common mistake that can easily be rectified.

Take a look around your interior to check for any of the above mistakes. The mistakes in this read can easily be corrected yourself!
